Mary Black - I Misunderstood (Shine)

He said darling I'm in love with you mind
The way you care for me it's so kind
Love to see you again wish I had more time
He was laughing as he brushed my cheek
Why don't you call me baby maybe next week
Promise now cross your heart and hope to die

Chorus

But I misunderstood
But I misunderstood
But I misunderstood
I thought he was saying good luck
He was saying goodbye

Repeat Chorus

Things I tried to put shine in his eyes
Wire wheels and shimmering things
Wild nights when the whole world seemed to fly
He said the thing that's so unique
When we're together we don't have to speak
We'll always be such good friends you and I

Chorus

But I misunderstood
But I misunderstood
But I misunderstood
I thought he was saying good luck
He was saying goodbye

Repeart Chorus

Elliott Smith- Pretty Mary K (other version) (03:25)
Lyrics- Pretty Mary K walks along the docks With some sailor's pay shoved down in her sock Pretty
Mary K with some little boy in blue Who can't stay away from you Pretty Mary K, take him back to
town I'm down here by the bay where the water pounds Up against the wall, crying black and blue
Keeps me away from you Pretty words that you whisper, maybe I misunderstood Somebody's not paying
attention What they promised and their word isn't good Oh, Mary K, I can see her face Down there in
the ...

"Depressing" is a word that is often used and misused. When my mother heard me listening to the soundtrack for "Twin Peaks" and she labeled it depressing. I protested that it wasn't depressing--it was MOODY. There is a difference. MCC's music can include melancholy, wistfulness, sadness and other emotions but never depression.

This song is so honest, so crystallized, and so beautiful, that there is no adequate response. What a living treasure this woman is!

One of the most underated song writers of our time. Saw her at Gallagher Bluedorn with my late wife in 2003. I remebering telling her after about five songs that I hadn' t heard a bad song yet. I still haven't. Your the best Mary.

MC2 is one of my favorite songwriters... It's like she is reading my journal. We are about the same age and she is talking about my life- sometimes it's a little scary.

The first time I heard this song, it broke my heart. Just hearing it for the millionth time after all these years, it still brings a tear to the eye of the woman that never cries.

First heard this on the Bob Harris show on Radio 2 one Saturday night about 10 years ago I used to record his shows on Mini Disc and play them in my car during the week when there was no quality on the radio what a fantastic treat it was when I first heard this as i was driving along listening to my own recording when all the other drivers had to put up with the usual 90s crap being played on the radio this song still sends shivers down my spine. Now where did I put that mini disc recorder !

i saw her in '93 at the venue at Paul Masson winery. What a beautiful night it was. A very intimate group, because a surrounding forest fire prevented many ticketholders from arriving. And of course they opened with "walking through fire". It was a great show. (have no idea where this was filmed)

This has to stand up there with some Joni Mitchell song lyrics. There can be no better compliment. Straight from her heart and it might break yours. Breaks mine every time.
